Is there a perfect mix between a sports car and a touring vehicle? Well there didn’t used to be, but the 2009 Mercedes SL63 aimed to change all that.
The SL63 had some rather large shoes to fill, with what the SL55 AMG did for Mercedes was to redefine the term “luxury car” – Mercedes was no longer seen as just a producer of a run of the mill luxury car – they were THE producer of THE high performance luxury car and there were a number of skeptics who thought that the SL63 was going to not fulfill the high expectations set forth by the predecessor.
Firstly, you don’t find many sports cars that top the scale in excess of two tons, but don’t think for on second that all that extra weight is entirely wasted because for all the extras it brings, it will hardly slow you down.
Almost 500 horses under the hood deftly take the Mercedes SL63 AMG Roadster from zero to sixty in under four and a half seconds – which will rival (or beat) many of the lighter and “sportier” cars on the road today – including the Chevy Camaro SS and the Dodge Challenger.A car that costs more than 4 times a Camaro will force the buyer to have high hopes.
It’s not just the competition from other car managers that the SL63 had managed to handle in direct comparison. With the addition of about twenty horses under the hood, the SL63 manages to out do it’s much touted predecessor by about a tenth of a second from zero to sixty and about a tenth of a second in the quarter mile. This slight advantage (even with the SL63 carrying extra poundage over the SL55), helps put to rest the fear that the latest in the AMG line wouldn’t stack up to the “super” car in the luxury class.
The engineering and beauty of this car are truly at another level when compared to cars in the similar price range.In under 20 seconds you can have to SL63 transformed from formally "dressed" to casual with the hard top folding down.
No surprise in terms of the interior design, it is flawless. Seat adjustments that could accommodate everyone from Jockeys to professional basketball players and everyone in between; a very user friendly, built in navigation system and heated seats complete with neck warmers are just a few of the amenities.
This Mercedes has superior power, superior handling and superior driver comfort – it is far and away the top of its class – in fact, at this moment it’s the only car in its class.Merc needed not to worry about the new comer loosing its top position.
