In 1953, Porsche called for a race car stronger than the 356. Therefore they came up with 550. It was the very first authentic competition vehicle by Porsche. It was pretty light-weight, it contained a couple of seats, light weight aluminum body, tubular framework and also an open top. They were originally racing simply with Volkswagen. The initial pair of 550 took over their category at Le Mans ending one-two in the 1500cc division. After that, just one of the two autos triumphed in its automotive category within the renowned Pan Americana Mexican road race.
